Killer Vetiver / Black Crows Hootenanny Photos.

Wikipedia definition: Hootenanny was used in the early twentieth century America to refer to things whose names were forgotten or unknown. In this usage it was synonymous with thingamajig or whatchamacallit, as in "hand me that hootenanny." Hootenanny was also an old country word for "party". Now, most commonly, it refers to a folk-music party.Photographer Alissa Anderson captured these amazing photos of Vetiver & The Black Crowes doing a mega jam of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" in Milwaukee on December 7th ot this year. Anderson has taken countless photos of such artists as Vetiver, Devendra Banhart, Espers, Fern Knight, Meg Baird, Port O' Brien along with many other folksters, rockers & hipsters. Check out more of her work at http://alissaanderson.com/

Vetiver In No Depression's 2008: In Review Series.
2008: In ReviewVetiver
Thing Of The Past / Gnomonsong
Vetiver, in a reflective mood.
"Music discovery" is a newish buzzword of this decade, now that it's easier than ever to make a recording yet harder to figure out which ones are worth listening to. Independent bloggers and web software tools have joined traditional press, radio, and our friends to guide us toward music of interest. But the musicians we like have always helped to cultivate our tastes as well, through their own social networks and the cover songs they teach us.
You probably hadn't heard half of the songs that Vetiver essays on Thing Of The Past, an all-covers album and the band's third full-length disc, before it appeared in May. You almost certainly hadn't heard Dia Joyce's "Sleep A Million Years" unless you'd been to Vetiver frontman Andy Cabic's house, because it appears he has the only copy in existence. Joyce's rescued song nests among artifacts from Iain Matthews, Elyse Weinberg and Bobby Charles that are far from obvious, as well as less obscure cuts that appeared on albums by Townes Van Zandt, Ronnie Lane, Hawkwind and Loudon Wainwright III.
Vetiver's approach is quite straightforward – they feature Cabic's close voice, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, drums, and maybe some backing vocals, steel guitar or violin – but the band also divines a powerful atmosphere from taste and intuition. Cabic coos over fluttering strings as Garland Jeffreys' sad "Lon Chaney" portrait reaches its end; that's chamber music to my ears. Hawkwind's "Hurry On Sundown" becomes an unholy incantation to raise the spirits, with a bit of Led Zeppelin III mysticism. Perhaps best of all is sometime comic Biff Rose's solo piano lament "To Baby", remade with a wistful, drifting groove.
Vetiver's original songs are typically subtle and understated, with the overheard quality of a shared secret. This well-curated set has the same feeling of discovery, but with a sweet permanence that runs much deeper than ephemeral buzz.

9. VASHTI BUNYAN: "TRAIN SONG"
REEBOK
Many of you will probably recognize players in this spot like Eli Manning, Peyton Manning and about 18 others trudging through deserts and abandoning half-mowed lawns to arrive at a stadium in a migratory V formation for the fall season. Of course, we were drawn to the recently rejuvenated folk hero Vashti Bunyan, who sings about glow worms; we're not the type to get chills just thinking about fourth-and-goal crunch-time, so McGarryBowen has obviously done something right.
Some Much Deserved Murcof Coverage.
Murcof's stunning Versailles Sessions has been getting some much deserved media attention. Among the more notable accomplishments Murcof made the cover of Italian music magazine Rockerilla (pictured above), was #43 on Wire's Record of the Year list, and has recieved reviews from Exclaim, Tinymixtapes and Almostcool. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart "Industry" Day Jobs Revealed On Stereogum.
Unless you were born with one of those silver spoons, you likely work a day job, sneaking time for your own business when not taking care of someone else's. You're not alone. Every week, Brandon Stosuy finds out how our favorite indie artists make ends meet...
In February, New York BTW the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart are releasing their self-titled full-length collection of jangly, noisy indie pop on the most fitting of labels, Slumberland. We recently posted the video for album track "Everything For You," which might have reminded you of Black Tambourine or other bands Slumberland was releasing in the '80s/early '90s.
The quartet's at Quit Your Day Job today because they also work outside of the band: Peggy's an editor at BuzzFeed, Kurt teaches music at a day camp in the summer and at a "rock workshop" during the school year, Alex is the editor of eMusic's Canadian site, and at the time of this interview Kip did marketing at Drillteam, but he just lost his job (yes, the economy even sucks for indie pop bands). After you read their tales of the best and worst viral videos and learn how kids find out about Franz Ferdinand make sure to stick around and listen to "Come Saturday." (Because it's all about the weekend.)
Alex, bass
STEREOGUM: How long have you been at eMusic?
ALEX: It'll be one year in February.
STEREOGUM: Did you have anything to do with the High Places release?
ALEX: The wheels were set it motion for the High Places release just before I started. The whole Selects program is probably the most fun and rewarding part of working in editorial at eMusic -- getting bands we like some exposure and some (usually much needed) cash. I was proud and excited to be a part of getting Crystal Stilts on board as a Selects band. Those guys deserve every bit of hype and attention. Great people, great band.
STEREOGUM: Can you explain a typical day? Peggy said you do merchandizing, write reviews, etc. What are your specific duties in your job description?
ALEX: I'm the editor of the Canadian site, so I choose which albums show up as "New & Noteworthy," which albums are "Review of the Day," which features run on the homepage, etc. and I do some back-end twiddling to schedule things to run. On top of that, all of us in Editorial write reviews, copy edit -- the standard stuff. Basically I listen to, think about, write about and am generally immersed in music all day, every day. It rules.
STEREOGUM: How did you end up as the editor of the Canadian site? Are Canadian's pissed? How do you know what will go over well in Canada?
ALEX: The Canada site launched for a combination of business and legal/licensing reasons and they needed someone to work out of the New York office. In I stepped, ready to take on the Toyko Police Clubs of the world. Merchandizing/editing is a bit of a behind-the-curtain job, so I don't think Canadians had much reason to be pissed. I hope not, anyway! Knowing what'll go over well is a combination of checking stats/past download behavior for artists, knowing what's popular in general and working with a label relations team to be aware of exclusives and such. Largely, Canadian eMusic subscribers lean similarly to U.S. subscribers: large-ish, melodic indie rock. Obviously there are some Canadian bands (Broken Social Scene and off-shoots, The Dears, etc.) that do especially well, also.
STEREOGUM: Any reviews you're particularly proud of writing/or that you think turned out well?
ALEX: I'm kind of a perfectionist, so it's hard for me to hold one thing up and say "man that was great!" Most recently I was pretty happy with the Josef K and Vivian Girls reviews. It's sometimes a lot harder for me to write about music I love in an intangible/personal way, but I think those came out okay.
STEREOGUM: Do you have to write any reviews of bands you don't like?
ALEX: Occasionally I do. I try to be diplomatic.
STEREOGUM: Do you work on this from the road?
ALEX: I actually just got a laptop, so for this next tour, I'll bring that and do some stuff from the road. It'll be hard to keep up with the day-to-day things, but I should be able to pitch in on occasional things -- small blurbs, etc.
STEREOGUM: What are some of the most popular downloads right now?
ALEX: Most of the stuff that does really well on eMusic is kind of more mainstream indie. So the bigger albums for us this year have been She & Him, Walkmen, Cat Power. The heavy hitters. Right now, for some reason, the Thievery Corp album is doing gangbusters. Also the Raveonettes album sold really, really well -- that was a nice surprise.
STEREOGUM: The Thievery Corp? Weird. Any theories why?
ALEX: Yeah we did think that was a bit weird. Riding the wave of the '08 Trip-hop revival, perhaps?
STEREOGUM: Who's your favorite Slumberland band ever?
ALEX: Probably Rocketship. It's hard not to say Black Tamborine, but I actually heard and loved Rocketship first and that sound ... man, it's so simple but it's so perfect.

Peggy, voice, keyboards
STEREOGUM: How long have you been at Buzzfeed?
PEGGY: Two years as of this past October. The site launched about a year and a half ago. The guy who started the company was actually my high school computer teacher.
STEREOGUM: After graduation you kept in touch with your high school computer teacher? I guess he doesn't teach anymore?
PEGGY: Well, it was a very small Southern high school. I think he thought I was cool because I listened to Stereolab and Sonic Youth instead of Garth Brooks, and that is a good qualifier to be a trend editor. I contacted him when I moved up to NYC, and then I ended up doing some freelance web design stuff for Huffington Post, which he helped start up.
STEREOGUM: What do your daily duties involve? Maybe walk us through a typical day.
PEGGY: Literally, I surf the internet all day. I have an RSS reader that compiles all my favorite blogs and news sources, it's something like 300 blogs probably at this point. Basically, I find things like viral videos, cute animals, people that are getting lots of attention for doing things like auctioning off their virginity or getting tased while doing a striptease. Just anything random or anomalous.
STEREOGUM: How much did that person get for their virginity?
PEGGY: She got a million dollars, apparently. There was also a gay banker who auctioned off his virginity as part of a financial bail-out plan.
STEREOGUM: Are you full-time? Are you able to work from tour?
PEGGY: Yep, it's pretty much a 10-6 job, and I have to actually show up in an office in Chinatown. I've used up all my vacation days for 2008 from touring already, so yeah, I'll definitely be working from this UK tour. I really hope they have wi-fi in pubs.
STEREOGUM: BuzzFeed's called a "'trends' aggregator." Can you explain how it works?
PEGGY: The goal of BuzzFeed is to be the source of viral media content on the web. So we have lots of statistical analysis that detects whether something is going to take off, whether it's because of Google search traffic, links from other blogs, or users clicking from our homepage. Not only do we publish our own curated content of buzzy links, videos, and images, but we also aggregate content from sources like Digg, the New York Times, Reddit, and StumbleUpon.
STEREOGUM: When a video crosses your desk are you able to sense if it's going to be a hit?
PEGGY: I have pretty high standards and most people who use the internet are dumb. No, I'm kidding. Sort of. Most viral videos that people pass around I do find pretty dumb. So if I see something that's truly funny that can break through my stern Asian exterior and make me laugh, then I do my best to make sure people see it. But those sorts of things are so few and far between that I feel like if I find anything that I can sense might go viral, I'll post it. For instance, I got a lot of hits on the Montauk Monster trend, but honestly, I had no idea that that thing would have been as big of a deal as it was.
STEREOGUM: I'm curious about some of the most popular recent stories ... and some all-time popular items.
PEGGY: Hmm, we get a lot of mileage out of posting about any hot person who isn't just a hot person. Like, a girl who's hot ... but she's also a champion pole vaulter! I also love sites like Face Transformer and Yearbook Yourself, or just hilariously-themed blogs like ManBabies or Old Men Who Look Like Lesbians or Erotic Falconry. Also, there was this photoshop contest we did of Disaster Girl that kind of took off with a life of its own. And we collaborate a lot with Ze Frank, who is awesome. Oh yeah, and remember Vagina Power? I still go on YouTube and watch that sometimes. Okay, I guess the internet is kind of amazing. I take back the part about it being dumb.
STEREOGUM: In you're opinion: Worst viral video ever?
PEGGY: I don't really understand how rick-rolling is funny to anyone who isn't your Great Uncle. Unless maybe you are Kip or Kurt and enjoy rick-rolling with sites like (editor's note: NSFW!) http://www.lemonparty.org.
STEREOGUM: What is it about cute animal pictures?
PEGGY: Cute animal photos are for everyone and cross all cultural boundaries. You send them to your mom, your girlfriend, your therapist. You would never send a photo of a cute animal to someone and get a response like "that's dumb" or "thanks for wasting my time, asshole." Whether you are an eight-year-old girl or a Rhodes scholar, chances are you will enjoy a good cute animal picture.
STEREOGUM: Your staff bio: "I'm a senior editor at BuzzFeed. I like shopping and bubblegum. Ask me about my emo band." OK, can you tell me more about your emo band?
PEGGY: Yes! It's called Misery Hates Company and we'll be opening for Dashboard Confessional (Chris Carrabba will never die!) across Eastern Europe next summer. But for now, I'm trying to focus on the goth band I'm in.

Kip, vocals and guitar
STEREOGUM: Can you explain Drill Team? I was looking at the website and it was non-music marketing w/ clients like Nike, Zune, Toyota, etc. Is this correct?
KIP: Well, Drillteam was originally part of Insound (i.e. all the original employees applied for jobs at Insound, but...). Ever since ADA/Warner bought Insound, we're independent. I suppose they didn't want us ... all those fancy clients you mentioned from on the website we no longer have -- but I do wonderful work on behalf of the sneaker company, Saucony Originals, who employed me to watch people play dodgeball and drink beer at the McCarren Pool Parties this summer. Sometimes I give away free shoes too. It's a rough job ... oh, I also write to bloggers and say stuff like "Incase has these limited edition Diplo/Mad Decent Macbook cases we want to give away--would you like to do run a contest and do that?"
Oh, by the way, we really do have a lot of these 15" Macbook Pro cases left over -- are you sure you don't want one? There's like, Abe Vigoda and Telepathe on them too... are you a size 12 shoe, by chance? I got a pair of Jazz O's at my desk ... Yup. It's a rough job...
STEREOGUM: So why did Insound start it initially?
KIP: It was started to help large companies not be totally awful when trying to get people (like me?) to like their products. But I liked Saucony Originals and Incase before hand, so they didn't really have to twist my arm too much...
It's at least cool, as most of our clients are fairly hands off and like, "can you give our stuff away to your friends for us -- we feel awkward doing it ourselves." So we do. Like, most of the time it's just setting up companies that want to sponsor a fun party with a fun party. Like, Incase will sponsor a Finger on the Pulse party and screenprint a one-off design on 50 tote bags and give away free iPhone and iPod cases to the people there. Or with Saucony it was like, helping them sponsor the Dodgeball this summer at McCarren park-- It's not obtrusive or a "hard sell" sort of thing. It's actually mostly fun.
STEREOGUM: How long have you been there?
KIP: I've been here almost three years.
STEREOGUM: What are your duties?
KIP: I do a lot of online promo stuff -- everything from updating our client's blogs/websites to writing bloggers about various events and promotions. I'm glad I haven't gotten fired yet (editor's note: Sorry, Kip) -- I think it's because I bring in cookies a lot and sometimes bagels -- they keep me for the baked goods. My boss is rad and has been really cool about letting me go on tour and stuff. And we do still share an office with Insound and get an employee discount, which is definitely nice -- especially since they sell a lot of vinyl, and I'm nerdy like that.

Kurt, drums
STEREOGUM: How old are the day campers?
KURT: I am assigned 6 different bands each semester, which are groups of 3-5 kids with an age range of 9-15.
STEREOGUM: Do the bands have names, etc? Like actual bands? If so, can you share some?
KURT: Yes. This year we haven't come up with most of the band names, since the kids usually do that towards the end of the semester. As for last semester, let's see ... there was Page One, Call Of Death (which they changed to Silver Titans), The Yoshi's, Driven To Tears, Midtown Traffic (who are now called Knave's 13).
STEREOGUM: Can you describe the place a bit? Where's it?
KURT: The music school is located up in Chappaqua, NY -- a pretty hefty commute. The facilities are beautiful and the school has really great gear for kids to practice on (it's also host to a variety of other lessons including, violin, piano, vocal training, etc.) the concerts are held at a nearby library with a pretty decent stage setup (motion sensitive lights and -- always essential -- fog included!) and it's really rewarding to see them perform.
STEREOGUM: Do you ever "sit in" on any of these performances? For instance, show up and do a guest guitar solo?
KURT: Occasionally, the bands are formed without all the positions being fulfilled, like bass or drums, and I'll have to play that instrument during the rehearsals and also during the performance at the end. It's cool though because it's actually really fun playing music with the kids.
STEREOGUM: Is this year-round? If so, what makes day camp different than, say, school?
KURT: Well, during the school year it's just held intensively every Sunday. But in the summer, it's held every day, like a normal day camp.
STEREOGUM: But it's run by the same organization?
KURT: Yes, the organization is just Music In Chappaqua which is a small music school in Chappaqua.
STEREOGUM: I interviewed some other School Of Rock instructor, Citay, and asked them about tuition. They said, "It's definitely not free. I think they do give scholarships, but I'm not sure how that all works." Do you have any idea?
KURT: At Music In Chappaqua's program, there is no application process -- you just sign up and pay the tuition fee. Some kids come in having never played guitar before and some kids can totally shred. They're placed into bands that are at their level/age group or they sign up with their friends and enter pre-formed bands. As far as i know, there aren't any scholarships for the Music in Chappaqua Rock Workshops.
STEREOGUM: Do you have a background in music education?
KURT: My formal training for this job was actually not in music education, but I have been teaching private lessons for several years. I have a Bachelor's Degree from NYU in General/Special Education, which comes in handy in that I'm dealing with large groups of kids armed with drum kits and loud guitars -- classroom management skills and endless patience are a definite necessity.
STEREOGUM: How many students per class? What are the classes like? Are you teaching a specific instrument? An array?
KURT: I teach every instrument in each band (bass, drums, guitars, vocals, keys). The kids learn cover songs of bands they are into and I attempt to widen their musical horizons with somewhat more obscure music (i.e. The Pixies if they're into, let's say Weezer). I also help them write and arrange their own original compositions. The music school Calendar follows the Junior High calendar for the local school district, so there's three trimesters. At the end of each trimester, there's either a concert or a recording session that the kids prepare for, for about three months prior.
STEREOGUM: Do the students request specific songs? If so, what are some popular ones?
KURT: As for popular songs kids want to learn ... let's just say AC/DC's "Back in Black," Metallica's "Enter Sandman," and a song by Led Zeppelin are performed in every concert. I think it's because a lot of the kids' parents are into classic rock. Occasionally I'll get a weird request like, "Hey can we learn 'Take Me Out' by Franz Ferdinand?" to which I'll reply, "How do you know Franz Ferdinand? You're 9." The answer is always "Guitar Hero."
STEREOGUM: Do think Guitar Hero at all prepares them for playing a real guitar? The general line on this seems to be "no."
KURT: Rhythmically, perhaps ... If they're playing on "expert" mode -- but there is no correlation between a button press on guitar hero and the actual notes on a guitar...
STEREOGUM: What's your favorite summer camp-themed movie?
KURT: Wet Hot American Summer!

Cobra Verde Reviewed On Dusted.
Dusted ReviewsArtist: Cobra Verde
Album: Haven’t Slept All Year
Label: Scat
Review date: Dec. 5, 2008
Ostensibly nothing more than a solid mid-western rock band from the indie underground, Cobra Verde has always been about much more than the sum of its deceptively simple parts. Rising from the ashes of Cleveland’s Death of Samantha in the early 1990s, Cobra Verde puts an arty, glam-tinged spin on bad-ass bar rock. And quite frankly, no one does it better.
The group’s latest, Haven’t Slept All Year, works as an interesting companion piece to its previous release, 2005’s Copycat Killers. The latter album is a strangely brilliant collection of covers that runs the gamut from the Easter Monkeys’ “Underpants” to a deliciously menacing recasting of Pink’s dance-pop anthem “Get This Party Started.” Haven’t Slept All Year is all new original material, yet it exhibits the same willingness to tackle any genre with both a dead-on stare and an arched eyebrow that made Copycat Killers so much twisted fun.
Establishing the album’s carefree romanticism is the opener "Riot in the Food Court, " which features a gargantuan hook for a chorus and plays like a lost track from the soundtrack to Fast Times at Ridgemont High. This may seem like an unlikely pose for a bunch of middle-aged rust belters to strike, yet not only does it works, it’s quite contagious. Frontman John Petkovic croons like he’s getting ready for the prom on the synth-poppy “Something About the Bedroom” and contemplates being stuck “between a boy and a man” on “Freeride,” evoking a genuine sweetness that should play well with any post-OC fans the band may have made.
Cobra Verde have always been stylistically restless and unpredictable, but never to such a degree over the course of a single album. While this is a rock album first and foremost (see “World Can’t Have Her”), there are touches of country (the aforementioned “Freeride”), debauched beat cabaret (“Wasted Again”), synth anthems (“Run Away”) and subtly swingin’ acoustic numbers (“Together Alone”).
The only thing more surprising than Cobra Verde’s existence this far into the new millennium is the quality of its recordings. Fifteen years since Viva La Muerte, their debut on Scat Records, Petkovic and Co. continue to rock hard in the face of the impending cultural apocalypse. With that in mind, Haven’t Slept All Year is an ideal soundtrack for the current trash heap that is our society. Cobra Verde cast their net wide and work with whatever comes slithering back, compressing it all into a weighty chunk of glittering pop-rock smite to be hurdled at whoever needs a knock on the head.

Tiny Mix Tapes Gives A HEAVVVY Review Of Pussygutt.
PussyguttShe Hid Behind Her Veil
[20 Buck Spin; 2008]
Styles: doom-noise
Others: Hammers of Misfortune, Samothrace, Rakhim
Original review
Even in an era when a huge strain of sub-guitar noiseniks are doing anything they can to sound as dark and ominous as possible, the bands of the 20 Buck Spin label sound, well, just a little extra dark and ominous. It’s at least the case with Rakhim, a positively grimy duo with an excellent doom-noise album to their credit, and now with Pussygutt, who vomit out 45 minutes of impending wrath like vengeful gods with She Hid Behind Her Veil. It makes all the sense in the world that they hale from the methland that is Idaho, as they can’t seem to put together a collage that doesn’t sound dipped in drugs.
A single-track, sitting-on-a-cloud drone excursion that plays like a deathly, wordless after-school special minus the commercials, the cliché images you’d expect march through your mind as Veil unfolds: red, fiery timpanis larger than the earth itself banging out a sparse rhythm; an orchestra of skeletons playing strings atop a floating piece of ice, just drifting to nowhere; decapitated bunnies — you get the idea. It has a dank-dungeon feel and smell, the sound of six-foot nails being driven into the earth, with a downpour of fuzz that doesn’t relent until it’s time to neatly tie it all up with the aforementioned string of strings.
There are more complex thrills out there if you’re looking for obscure product, but Pussygutt is what they is. Don’t begrudge them for that.

Restiform Bodies 7.1 Review On Pitchfork Today.
Restiform Bodies:TV Loves You Back
[Anticon; 2008]
Rating: 7.1
Original Review
California is a big state. And hip-hop aficionados, with their firm sense of place, tie Oakland to a unique style of rap that bears little resemblance to its famous counterpart in Los Angeles. The brightest lights of the Bay Area, E-40 and Too $hort, never fully bought into the dark, trigger-happy sensationalism of the Death Row artists: Guns simply weren't part of their vision of, or path to, the good life. Emphasizing the joy of letting loose, the hyphy movement that sprang up a few years ago only cemented the scene's drama-free outlook.
But Oakland's Restiform Bodies are agitators. And what better place for this hall of modest fame-- the indie-rap supergroup of Passage, Bomarr Monk, and Telephone Jim Jesus-- than Anticon? Their debut on the label, TV Loves You Back, presents a furious, righteous, and not entirely subtle dissatisfaction with capitalism. Thanks to the recent tumult in the world's markets, the album, like the DNC platform, has an added punch of timeliness. To be fair, mindless consumerism is more the target here than, say, overly leveraged banks. In short, the rappers mount their attack on low culture, not high finance.
"Consumer Culture Wave" suggests a fight-the-Man mission with its title. Luckily, the song is better than that, too gloriously strange and oblique to be pressed into the service of jam-band leftism. (Love and gender seem to be the real subject, anyway.) Better to revel in the fluorescent textures and spastic rhythms, an accurate evocation of life in the attention-deficient multimedia slipstream, than to grope for political provocations in the lyrics. After all, it would have sufficed to attack QVC in only one song, you'd think. Docking too many points here isn't fair, anyway: Laid out on the page, even the best songs forfeit their essence. But when you spit nonsense with the apocalyptic ferocity of El-P, in many ways the hyperpolitical white rapper's template, that nonsense may as well be scripture.
Ever eager to disquiet, the Bodies even stoke the listener's anxieties about machines (on the sludgy, horror-string-laced "Pick It Up, Drop It") and modern medicine ("Ameriscan"). If there's a paranoid style in American hip-hop, this may be its purest expression. Nodding to the post-Thanksgiving virus that turns the lanes of Wal-Mart into the Ben-Hur chariot race, "Black Friday" bounces between drum'n'bass speed and trip-hop languor to manic-depressively link consumerism and domestic life. That the Bodies lean on everything from the New Romantics to crunk to post-rock to ghettotech to paint this cultural self-portrait only amplifies the strangeness-- and accuracy-- of TV Loves You Back.
"Movies are for entertainment," Louis B. Mayer famously stated. "If you want to send a message, send a telegram." The role of art isn't quite that narrow, of course, but the legendary producer knew that audiences didn't want to be lectured. And sadly that's what a lot of independent rap does. The Restiform Bodies avoid this. As Passage put it: "All the information on TV Loves You Back is stuff I'm trying to make peace with as a person, and that I think we all have to make peace with as a society." That sums up why the record is not only digestible, but outright luscious. We're not watching a presentation or reading a complaint. We're not being condemned for watching "The Hills". We're living, for a YouTube minute, inside three minds warped and wracked by our national addiction to the screen. It's equal parts unsightly and arresting in the way that most pathologies are.

Lakin Grimm In Time Out New York.
Time Out New York / Issue 688 : Dec 4–10, 2008By Jay Ruttenberg
Photo: Ports Bishop
GRIMM TIDINGS Singer-songwriter Larkin Grimm chronicles a berserk American experience on her new album, Parplar.
The itinerant folksinger Larkin Grimm has come downtown from her current home in Spanish Harlem—length of residence: one week—to grab breakfast on her way out of town. Rain tumbles down with a ferocity generally seen in movies about shipwrecks, yet she dines outside, beneath the restaurant’s modest canopy, remaining miraculously dry as the city soaks. To the musician’s right sits a drunk, welcomed to Grimm’s table after he drifted by requesting money. “Arggh!” he mumbles. “No mucho English.” The aromatic stranger drifts in and out of consciousness, missing the fantastic, at times unbelievable life story that the singer recounts with a monologuist’s poise.
Grimm is 27, the colorful tattoos of her generation splayed across her arms. Her riveting new album, Parplar, is her third full-length, yet the first to feature nonimprovised material and gain wider distribution, courtesy of Young God Records. Her songs are at once witchy, funny and intensely sexual—as befits an album that she claims to be “about Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and the battle between male and female energies in the world.”
Like many eccentric young artists, Grimm is a child of hippies. “There are a lot of us making psychedelic folk music, and we’re not freaky or fakes,” she contends. “We’re just our parents’ children—this is our culture.” Parplar was recorded earlier this year, but its roots lie in the late ’60s, when Grimm’s mother dropped acid on a family sailing trip, “realized that everything was messed up” and ran away from home. The future Mother Grimm hitchhiked to Haight-Ashbury, where she minded children of the Grateful Dead and enlisted in the Holy Order of MANS, a religious commune into which Larkin was born.
The singer’s parents left the Order when she was six. “In the ’80s, the utopian communities that thrived in the ’60s started transforming into the weird cults that we have now,” explains Grimm, who continues to dabble in various factions “because they remind me of home.” The family moved to the Appalachian Mountains so that her fiddler father could immerse himself in hillbilly music. The young singer, accustomed to socializing with pacifists, reacted to the rednecks she suddenly encountered in predictable fashion: When her parents found Grimm throwing knives, they enrolled her in a liberal boarding school. “No longer was I the delinquent bad kid,” she says. “Now, I was class president.”And so, a decade after leaving the Holy Order of MANS, Grimm matriculated at Yale, where she soon befriended the scion of a far more demented American sect: presidential daughter Barbara Bush. “She was interesting,” Grimm claims. “Her best friend was a black gay guy—the gayest man on campus. She was in love with a radical environmentalist, who broke up with her because he didn’t want the Secret Service snooping around. She drank a lot and had problems with boys. There was this very mean plan to get her pregnant and then follow her when she got her abortion. Guys were trying to sleep with her and they were planning to poke a hole in the condom.”
“Hech hech!” the homeless man murmurs. “Acapulco mucho bueno.”
“You can’t blame people for who their parents are,” Grimm adds.
The singer had her own plans for the President’s daughter: She hoped to involve Bush in a performance-art piece, “turning her into a fabulous Paris Hilton character.” Before this could unfold, however, an unpleasant drug experience caused Grimm to cease talking for months and flee to Alaska, where she fasted on a mountaintop. She was discovered there by a kindhearted shaman—named Jezebel Crowe!—who taught her the ways of the medicine woman…and encouraged her to return to Yale. (These days, even witches harbor Ivy League ambitions.)
Returning to school, Grimm broke her silence. She began playing music both as a member of the Dirty Projectors—a band she has since left—and solo. “I realized that when you’re singing, all your emotional truth comes through,” she says. It’s these voices from Grimm’s life that aggregate on her broad, bizarre, uniquely American record, with its collegiate folk and Appalachian howls, ’60s spirituality and contemporary pop culture, chaste hymns and sexual deviance. Her story drawn to the present, the singer rises from the table, gives a piece of corn bread to the homeless man and walks alongside Tompkins Square Park. The rain has cleared, casting the city in a luminous glow. “That Mexican guy totally just felt me up,” she says. “I’m probably the only woman he’s touched in ten years, which is so sad. I’m okay giving him a little bit of sexual healing.”
Larkin Grimm plays the Charleston Fri 5, the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine Sat 6 and Housing Works Bookstore Café Wed 10.

SHUT UP, LITTLE MAN! The Complete Recordings now on iTunes!
Paraphrased from the (NEWLY RELAUNCHED!) SHUT UP LITTLE MAN! website:
The long-awaited, much-requested Complete Recordings of Shut Up Little Man! are now available digitally in seven separate volumes. The original recordings have been carefully edited and sound engineered for higher fidelity and clarity, so that every moment of audio savagery and drunken hilarity of Peter and Raymond has been preserved and represented. Unlike the short snippets on the popular "Best Of" album, the new Complete Recordings feature mostly unexpurgated dialogues, enabling the listener to get a truer sense of the putrid flow of an evening with the infamous duo-- the absurd barbs back and forth, the snowballing aggression, and the booze-laden verbal and physical exchanges. Each volume of the Complete Recordings is different and jammed with 74 minutes of Pete & Ray rants with disturbing and humorous one-liners not found on the "Best Of" CD.
iTunes is exclusively selling digital downloads of these titles between now and December 23rd. Own all seven!
Complete Recordings, Volume 1: "I Can Kill You From a Sitting Position"
Complete Recordings, Volume 2: "I Was A Mean Motherfucker in My Time"
Complete Recordings, Volume 3:"You Think Your Mother and Father Were a Couple of Boys?"
Complete Recordings, Volume 4: "A Night in the Stony Lonesome"
Complete Recordings, Volume 5: "I Don't Like All This Cuteness"

Stereogum Announces Upcoming MV & EE Release.
MV & EE sneak preview song download and feature on Stereogum today.Prolific deepwoods Vermonters Matt Valentine (who played in the excellently ramshackle Tower Recordings) and Erika Elder are back with Drone Trailer. They're not shy about releasing recordings (together and apart), but the collections often show up in limited runs or on smaller labels. The forthcoming six-song collection Drone is out via the (slightly) easier to locate DiCristina. On it, the duo's backed by three-dude strong Golden Road, as you should be able to deduce after listening to the dense, full-band psych of cathartic opener "Anyway." We asked Valentine to unpack the lyrics. Let us know if it helps.
What inspired "Anyway"'s "anyway I can" theme? Y'know "space" was once the end all for the conqueroo ... Now that scene is a mere blip on the sonar of Spit James. We hinted at it sometime back with our "Meditations On Payday," that rub was as much Mississippi John Hurt as it was Rip Torn. Now we gotta go beyond nomenclature into some sorta '"any" "way" -- the "many are one" philosophy, you'd be as grateful as we if your "many" were a true singular "one," or one within a pair. It all gets in there anyway.
And, what was the spaceman's master plan? The spaceman could be Bill Lee. In his "space" the main aim to the end of the game is not allow anyone "on" base. That's the key, like salts to alchemists and the Masonic depth to baseball, turning "on" has always been where it is at. Tesla, the energy monopolies ... dig the idea of standing tall, as in the indian chief, or the inverse of laying low. You "can't stand" can be many rooms, mebbe the Velvets said it best ..."I Can't Stand It Anymore." Dig their castle, we are just a mere moat in this thing, swimming as best we can. This song is about a river and a life raft.
Drone Trailer is out 1/20 on DiCristina.

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart Video Premiere On Yesterday's Forkcast (12/1/08).
Pitchfork.tv: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart: "Everything With You" [Video Premiere]
An iffy economy, a war in Iraq, and a Democrat returning to the White House aren't all the late 2000s have in common with the early 1990s. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's "Everything With You" is the type of melodic, love-blissed noise-pop single that could have come out on Slumberland years ago, but instead it's taken from the New York four-piece's forthcoming full-length debut for the label. The video, too, recalls an era when handheld camcorders rather than cell phones and digital cameras were the most convenient way of making home videos. Directed by Art Boonparn, it follows two likable young women goofing around and having adventures. In indie pop, it's always OK to have a best friend.

Larkin Grimm New York Times Review Yesterday (Sunday 11/30/08).
Larkin GrimmOriginal Post
Combing through the singer-songwriter Larkin Grimm’s strange and deeply original new record, “Parplar” (Young God), you keep picking up rude shocks, some of them sung in a pleasant, cooing voice, over original and hypnotic combinations of different kinds of folk music. “Oh Mama, I’m a bad spirit, be my host,” she sings. And: “My hooks are sharp, my heart is cold.” And: “Damn the man in you.” And: “Who told you you’re going to be all right? Well, they were wrong.”
A lot of her lyrical images (and the arrangement ideas, like mariachi brass with fingerpicked guitar and synthesizer) seem to come from dreams. But her dreams aren’t utopian; they’re as complicated as real life.
Upcoming Grimm shows:
